When life gives cactusses…

A bullet journal bible study

I chose bullet journal bible studies to section off my weekly bible study and reading.Bullet journal bible study is a compilation of study , reading and prayer. This idea was born from my prayer journal as I looked for creative ways to engage in the word of God.

Things I love to include:

  • Sometimes a theme , title or topic.
  • A tracker to track my progress
  • Study notes
  • Scripture memorization
  • Prayer
  • Scripture doodles

But there’s a little twist with this one! It is a story with different characters , a problem , human solution, conflict and climax ending in a broken trust and relationship.

So, I needed to apply a different writing frame to suit a story type of bullet journal study.

I started with poetry quizzes and I found the clue to write about Hagar in my second quizz in the last line: “the God who sees .”I decided that that there is so much more to look into , especially the scene where Hagar was alone in the wilderness.

My own wilderness experience

I am married, but when my husband was working away from home ; it felt like I was on my own and had to cope with ministry, home , kids and work.We just moved to another town where we faced the challenge to adjust. Our new setting was like a wilderness itself, because of all the satanic – and withcraft practises in the town.It was (still is) like walking amongst scorpions!

Tough and Rough! But, one thing I experienced is that I bulldozed through the toughest wall with strength I only received through prayer and my relationship with God.

The winds tossed me around, tried to change my direction and scramble my GPS signals ; but during this moments I bowed and got on my knees and wait for the hot and scorching wind to blow over me.

“Now Sarai,Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;…”

Genesis 16:1

Now let’s start with a profile about Hagar.

First read to compile a background and profile of the subject(Hagar)

An Egyptian slave

“Now Sarai,Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”(Genesis 16 :1-2)

A surrogate for Sarai

“Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.“Genesis 16: 4

“Your slave is in your hands, Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.”
Genesis 16:6

A single mother

“So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son…”

Second read to scribble down notes

Firstly,I included a tracker in the shape of an eye , because this specific study sketches the wonderful radar of God that caught up on all the questions and tears of Hagar even in the desert.

The tracker will be used to track progress and can be marked with highlighters or filled with verses.

Secondly, I engage into the passage using observation with questions Who? Where? What? This is the part where the unraveling takes places, where pieces are being put together and linked ,taking you straight to the application.

This is basically the SOAP method, but only with a few extras like doodling or scripture art and memorization of scriptures.

Hope for single mothers

The situation with Hagar is not so different than many woman today. In fact , I believe that many became stuck within the vast landscapes of their desert season, with their eyes on the horizon hoping help would arrive. No direction! Sometimes they follow their own misguided trails over and over again.

So many ( with specific focus on woman) are facing wilderness experiences, dryness, fainting, rejection, despair….the wilderness characteristics can form an endless chain stretching beyond the edges of the horizon of the dusty landscapes. With the scorching sun on your head and the heat from beneath …there is no escape.

Sometimes a cactus can be the only shade and comfort, but wait! You cannot even trust the shade of the cactus , gotta know your distance to escape the thorns.Maybe find nourishment from its fruit, if any .

Location: near a well /spring

Breakthrough: the angel of the Lord found her….

Beer Lahai Roi ( the name of the spring)means well of the Living One who sees me.

What caused Hagar to be in this situation?

Her inability to submit!

Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”Genesis 16:9

Finally, prayer

As woman ,
Daughter of the King
I slip on my sandals of Prayer,I bow down
And cover my loins with strength,
I dress my lips with praise
I raise my banner
To let the atmosphere know
That You are the God who sees !
Find us o Lord,
Even in the wilderness,
Locate those longing for you,
And let Your angel
Lead them out.
In Jesus name.

  1. Although Hagar had not chosen to take on a role in Abe and Sarah’s soap opera, her character became a very active and aggressive part of the story. Many times ‘the other woman’ forgets her place. She is not the wife…she is what the young girls call ‘the side piece’….yet she wants a more active role and becomes desperate and very aggressive. God never intended for Husbands to have multiple wives, nor multiple women. Satan had poisoned minds and marriages with this foolishness starting with Lamech.
