I’ve always loved to wear jeans and pants, but occasionally I wear dresses and skirts. This is what makes me a little odd and sometimes not being accepted in our conservative congregation’s circles. The clothes we wear are all about choices, especially choices for every occasion. It reveals bits of our unique character and preferences.
If outward appearances have such a strong impact, how much more powerful can that of spiritual appearance be? Just the other morning I and my colleagues discussed the impact of clothing on your mood and also the way others react towards you. Others are looking at our clothing!
Sometimes we are forced to make changes to our wardrobe. Some of the changes are due to a new job, ethics, maturity, or pregnancy. Seasonal changes are the biggest to determining our dress code.
But what does our wardrobe have to do with a visual Bible study?
Scripture has a beautiful way to refer to spiritual actions and values as clothing that needs to be put on or to be taken off.
“For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness“
“Strength and dignity are her clothing…”
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, …”
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
“Adorn yourself with eminence and dignity,
And clothe yourself with honor and majesty”
When I started journaling, the first scripture I was introduced to was Romans 12:2, the renewal of the mind. And I believe that it is one of the most important areas to seek transformation.
Once again, it’s about taking control of your gates! Our eyes and ears send messages to our brain and hereby control our lives accordingly. I believe that this is also true concerning our spiritual eyes and -hearing.
1.1What part does the helmet of salvation play in preserving our mind?
We are being instructed to put on the full armor of God. We’re living in a sinful and corrupt world and our salvation guards our minds so we would be able to avoid sinful thoughts and differentiate what is acceptable to God. It’s not that easy, but being mindful, growing closer to God by spending more time in prayer and His Word, and putting on the full armor of God can help to bring our thoughts under Holy Spirit surveillance.
When we forget to do this, we become prey for the enemy to plant lies and strongholds in our thoughts to harm our walk with Christ.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
The book of Colossians set the record straight beginning with the above scripture, pointing out what we ought to be thinking about as born-again people.
A higher – or quality level of thinking is expected of those following Jesus Christ. Our thoughts are connected to our hearts and if our hearts are set on heavenly things, it will influence our thoughts.
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life , appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.Collosians 3:3-4
2.Cleaning out our closet
The first thing that came to mind was the image of clothing. Just like dirty clothing needs to be changed so does our spiritual clothing. But first, let’s evaluate our wardrobe!
3.What tags are we wearing?
If I’m interested in an item it’s the first to look for: Tags. Tags on clothes tell us more about the piece of clothing:
- The price
- How it should be treated
- Inform and warn
- Type of material and percentage
Tags are attached to clothing, defining it to buyers which then offer them a choice: to purchase or not. Tags make it possible for others to read us, whether we are children of God or the world.
In Mental training 1, I spoke about the 8 characteristics of a thought and the importance of looking after our mental health. Our choices are influenced by our thinking. Sometimes people think a choice through and others talk it through with someone to gain clarity.
4.Cleaning our closets
Some people love to store items they do not even wear anymore or items we completely forgot about.
“Storing takes up space.”
There can be different reasons for this, but one of the reasons, I’ve learned, could be soul ties.
Clothes also represent past seasons.
Let’s get rid of some things!
4.1 The application
During the application we apply the scriptures to our own lives. Its like doing self evaluation!
- How does this truth apply to me?
- Am I evaluating my spiritual garments
- Do I cloth myself with the word of truth
- What tags am I wearing?
- Am I a good advertisement for the kingdom of God?
We have to deal with some strongholds in our minds first and get rid of tags and wrongful thought patterns, fixing broken links, refreshing our focus before we can tackle the punching back.
“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer.”
