Desire to hear God’s voice

Calling out !

Jeremiah 33:3

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

Firstly, God, Himself invites us to call out to Him.He prompt us to seek and we shall find.

When I committed myself to God by accepting Christ in my heart, I was told that I will be lead by His Spirit, that I must listen to His voice. Well, telling this to a newborn believer was like asking a baby to walk! Coming out of a world system, trying to make sense of this new way of life wasn’t easy, but God is faithful: He tracked heart!

Discerning the voice of God

When you go for a walk in nature, you can easily hear the different bird sounds. Why? You are in nature, away from everything! So you have a 100 % opportunity to listen and explore and not be easily interrupted.

5 Tips to connect and explore

1.Journaling

The best way for me to track and test my hearing from God was through journaling. I basically started writing down all my thoughts, dreams, questions, and scriptures on paper. I could not get satisfactory answers when asking people for guidance.

2. Reading and studying the scriptures

By tackling the word of God I could find basically all the scriptures about the topic and I wrote them down to search for individual meanings.

3.Teachings

Most of the time younger believers do not exactly know the meaning in scripture, therefore I found it really useful to listen to teachings or by joining a group where they spend time teaching. I was very cautious about this and test everything at the hand of God’s word, not to be deceived into false doctrines.

To me, fellowship is like a brainstorming session where we can discuss topics we do not grasp and get a chance to ask stupid questions. We learn from other views. Our own views are sometimes so narrow and can be broadened by listening to others in the group.

5.Having a mentor

A mentor relationship is similar to the relationship Christ had with His disciples. In such a relationship you are taught, motivated, corrected and you have the first-hand experience to modeling the faith walk. I remember how I did not feel comfortable about the way many people prayed the way they were taught.”Why can’t people just drink coffee while speaking to God sometimes”, I thought? And I met someone who tiredly came from work, making coffee and talking to God, my mentor in my second year of university.

6.Asking God yourself !

I was very skeptical and hesitant at times and she just said: “Go ask Him yourself.” And I did. This is where prayer journalling started for me.I asked God and write down my questions.

7.Now watch out !

This is where things get very interesting as God cannot be limited. He can use one or more of a variety of ways to get back to us when least expected. To me, at the beginning of my journey, He used scripture and dreams. Nowadays I find his voice answering me through magazines, people, my eight-year-old son, a television broadcast, a book, a movie, my garden 😄….the list can go on. I like to drink my tea in the garden in the morning, reading the Word and meditating on His word. So one day my eyes were drawn to something I wrote on a piece of wood, showcasing in my garden, and then I heard God spoke to my heart: that’s you! Sometimes I gave a good laugh at myself, not grasping Him immediately. Other times, I burst out in tears, humbling myself before Him.

Are you plugged in?

1 Samuel3:10

And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

If God can speak to a young child , He can speak to us also!

Psalm 32:8&9

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.

Now watch out for His answer and enjoy!
